MM HD Live in Mac App Store

MM HD went live in the Mac App Store today. But before I announce it publicly on the ActionSoft blog and mailing list, I wanted to get feedback on how to do the $5 upgrade option.

First, it's highly critical that if at all possible, Midnight Mansion HD gets
Featured
by the Mac App Store. Being featured means it gets listed in one of the categories on their Games page, such as
New and Noteworthy
or
Staff Favorites
. Right now, it's not listed there. Apparently only selected games get listed in any of those categories.

If MM HD doesn't get featured, it's unlikely new players will ever find it in the store, and I really need the publicity.

Apparently the Mac App Store considers featuring games that meet some minimum requirements of sales and ratings. So here is my plan:

- Have all owners of the old Midnight Mansion purchase Episode 1 on the Mac App Store for $4.99. But download Episode 2 from the ActionSoft website (once this version becomes available). I could make it so that the registration codes from the original Midnight Mansion work for Episode 2, thereby making the total cost to
upgrade
to the new game only $5, as promised.

The advantage here is that A) Users get their $5 upgrade, and B) Hopefully a lot of sales and ratings are generated for Episode 1 on the Mac App Store, which will hopefully result in the game getting featured. And that would be a Very Good Thing for the future of Midnight Mansion.

My question is, does this sound acceptable? I know it's a *little* weird to download Episode 1 from the Mac App Store, and the other from the ActionSoft website, but in my mind it's the best all-around solution.

Please note: for those who don't want to purchase Episode 1 from the Mac App Store, YES -- I WILL be making that available from the ActionSoft website as well in 2 or 3 weeks hopefully. But the hope is that most people who have OS X 10.6 or later would get Episode 1 from the Mac App Store, which would allow them to review the game there, again, hopefully increasing chances of getting featured.

CMs with "buried" levers

The following mansions have
buried
levers that can prevent a player from completing a mansion. This results from a change Vern made for MM HD. It looks to me as though levers were placed one tile below where Jack can walk for aesthetic reasons. Designers weren't happy with the base, and didn't want to resort to using custom graphics. In MM HD, Jack cannot be floating (or standing) above a lever and use it - he has to be standing on the same lever or within 6 pixels (I think Vern said).

Brother from Another Planet, by aquamat has 119 rooms, and 32 are affected:
Anyone else feel the earthquake today? It happened within 50 miles of where I work in Columbia, MD and I definitely felt it at work in our 12-story office building! Haven't felt one that strong since I lived in Alaska. Traffic was extra fun going home.
HD ready MM1 custom mansions

To be able to use the custom mansions that were built for the original Midnight Mansion game (MM1) they have to be converted. We, the admins, are testing all the original MM1 cm's and will eventually upload them in HD ready format to the same download pages where the original MM1 cm's are stored. We will also make a list of the HD ready cm's with links to their download pages.
Note that we will not make a new category for talk about individual MM1 HD cm's. Instead we will use the same category that hosts the boards for talk about individual, original MM1 cm's.

Note that you can convert your old cm's yourself but they may still not be playable due to some changes in the game engine. The faq also explains how to convert mansions with custom graphics which is a rather difficult job. We, the admins, will not spend our time on fixing custom graphics in original cm's to make them work in the HD. We will, however, try to contact the authors and ask them if they are interested in doing that for us.

OK, I have so far:
1. Added a category for general MM1 HD talk with two boards.
2. Changed the names of two other categories.
3. Added a board in the
Custom mansions area (MM1, MM2 and MM1 HD)
.
4. Changed name of downloading board for MM1

I will post explanations on how we will handle MM1 HD cm's on the boards. We must also post a list of HD ready mansions and links to the download pages. I will upload the HD cm's that I have tested.

Is there anything else we need to do ASAP?
