MM HD Live in Mac App Store
#1
MM HD went live in the Mac App Store today. But before I announce it publicly on the ActionSoft blog and mailing list, I wanted to get feedback on how to do the $5 upgrade option.

First, it's highly critical that if at all possible, Midnight Mansion HD gets
Featured
by the Mac App Store. Being featured means it gets listed in one of the categories on their Games page, such as
New and Noteworthy
or
Staff Favorites
. Right now, it's not listed there. Apparently only selected games get listed in any of those categories.

If MM HD doesn't get featured, it's unlikely new players will ever find it in the store, and I really need the publicity.

Apparently the Mac App Store considers featuring games that meet some minimum requirements of sales and ratings. So here is my plan:

- Have all owners of the old Midnight Mansion purchase Episode 1 on the Mac App Store for $4.99. But download Episode 2 from the ActionSoft website (once this version becomes available). I could make it so that the registration codes from the original Midnight Mansion work for Episode 2, thereby making the total cost to
upgrade
to the new game only $5, as promised.

The advantage here is that A) Users get their $5 upgrade, and B) Hopefully a lot of sales and ratings are generated for Episode 1 on the Mac App Store, which will hopefully result in the game getting featured. And that would be a Very Good Thing for the future of Midnight Mansion.

My question is, does this sound acceptable? I know it's a *little* weird to download Episode 1 from the Mac App Store, and the other from the ActionSoft website, but in my mind it's the best all-around solution.

Please note: for those who don't want to purchase Episode 1 from the Mac App Store, YES -- I WILL be making that available from the ActionSoft website as well in 2 or 3 weeks hopefully. But the hope is that most people who have OS X 10.6 or later would get Episode 1 from the Mac App Store, which would allow them to review the game there, again, hopefully increasing chances of getting featured.

Also, feedback is welcome about this page. Hopefully this explains everything clearly to those who had purchased the original Midnight Mansion, and are wondering how to upgrade for $5 (and also don't know what the difference between Episode 1 and 2 is)?

Oh by the way, all beta testers are eligible for a free copy of the game if you wish it. However, you'll be unable to make ratings / reviews of the Mac App Store version if you want a free copy, as doing reviews/ratings requires you to purchase it.

For a free copy, contact me by email once the *ActionSoft* version of the game has been released, and I'll issue you a code.

Thanks for the purchase and review, Leon!

Vern, at those prices, glad to get it through the Mac App Store (but will have to wait until next Wed. for payday), and will write a review. Do you think it will help more/as much to get both versions through the App Store and do reviews on both, or do you think the key thing is to get new users 'hooked' (heh, heh...) Wink on Episode 1, and let them get their fix later on the basis of playing MM HD 1?

Wooooo! Congratulations! Sadly, I never owned the original Midnight Mansion... still, it's nice to see you up live!

(Also, I might buy the game for my family's Mac anyway Wink )

I mean, who doesn't have $5 nowadays. It's amazing that 5 years ago this would have been a $30 game easily. Well, times are changing.

I am telling all my friends and family to go buy the crap out of this game on the App Store, hopefully pushing it into the top 10 or into a featured category.

Compared to the majority of games on the App Store, the quality and unique gameplay of this game will roflstomp its way to the top without much trouble, by the way things look now.
