Hi Sam,

I downloaded your new version, where you said you eliminated some cheap deaths. Much appreciated, but there are still some that bother me.

Is there a way to avoid the walking skeletons of death in the very beginning when you climb down the first vine?

 What are Secrets?

In other words: what should deserve a big blue S in the Editor? (And please don't tell me this one is not blue!)
•
I don't think Money or Shield etc. need to be involved. A hidden but empty room could do the trick if, say, it looks nice. Or just because Tongue
A bit of secrecy would be required. For instance, If I put some difficultly accessible money in a room but where all the way is disclosed, then it shouldn't be a Secret: the reward is the money itself. On the other hand, if the money is perfectly visible but the way is (at least partly) hidden, then it could deserve an S.
Where, inside a Secret, should I place that S? Say, in a big (secret) room with difficultly accessible money: should it be located in the entrance or on the money? I think that since S counts Secrets, and not Points, Jack should be rewarded by it for finding the secret room, and by the money for daring to go and get it. Thus, he could get the Secret for finding the cunningly hidden room but not the Points because he has only one life left and doesn't want to take any unnecessary risk. Even more so if the reward is a Shield (you may want to keep space in Jack's pockets for keys).
MMaM > Cheap death in #15328
Posted by: brell - 02-07-2007, 05:32 PM - Forum: Midnight Mazes and Monsters - Replies (2)

On the old forums I made a remark about room #15328. There are crumbling bricks on the top and bottom left side. On the top it is just red herring. But on the bottom, if Jack jumps into the left wall, he falls down to room #15527 and dies.

aquaMat, Wingy,

I've only been back for a day but here I am learning already....

Didn't know about the multiple music file options. I tried something similar with the background screens and it doesn't seem to take anything over 6.

Glad that others are starting to do serious modifications to MM. When I started on this a long time ago in a galaxy far far away only a couple of people were doing it but now it seems as if a whole new group is taking on the challenge.

I also have had Bias and SoundConverter but they both seem to not like the Intel Macs and I have had issues on the PPC platform similar to what you're seeing. So I guess for the time being I'll keep the SoundApp solution which although a little hokey does do the job. I've also been playing around with another nifty little piece of code called Soundflowerbed which allows me to do virtual patching between music/sound applications using Apple IAC. I'd like to get a midi interface for my old Roland D-10 but since I just dabble in music I don't want to spend a lot on an interface that will spend most of it's time collecting dust.
For Dominator I wanted to create John Williams type music but the first 2 things I've come up with are based strictly on Apple Loops. And it's been Matt doing that. I'm working on a 3rd piece written completely by hand but working with the music typing and miniscule keyboard in Garageband has made me pull out the Roland and an old Yamaha and I think I'll wind up in Finale which is more robust for
real
music but also carries that nasty learning curve thing.

As far as DS goes believe it or not it actually started on the Mac (or so I've been told) but like most software has taken a turn to the Dark Side. Take you time with it and don't make the mistake I did by assuming I could go straight from DS to MM graphics. Then you wind up in that annoying
Oh crap, the edges look terrible
mode. Just make PS posting part of the process and you'll see how much easier it becomes. I'm probably what would be considered a proficient DS user so PLEASE don't hesitate to ask me for help and again, I do have a ton of content so let me know if you can't find something.

In the same vein I'm probably going to ask you guys a lot of sound stuff. Finally what mansions have you guys put together so I can go get inpired to finish the dilithium mines and get Dominator posted. Matt's also looking to play some new mansions so any suggestions would be welcome.

And now back to that annoying work thing.....

later,

We're back
Posted by: joeb - 02-06-2007, 03:42 PM - Forum: Hello ! - Replies (14)

After receiving multiple requests to return to the board and Matt's desire to start building mansions again we've decided to return. There were things that were said and done that were regrettable. That is water under the bridge and we would like to start anew. Our first new release will be a TOTAL modification of the MM environment. New critters, new bricks, new backgrounds, new music. With all the money Jack picked up in the mansions he started a technology company and no longer runs around in the mansions. His new company has built the JAC 2006 who has taken Jacks place in the quest for adventure.
His first assignment will be Attack on the Dominator. A fairly challenging romp through a space station ala the Death Star. After navigating his way thru the Dominator he will beam down to the dilithium rich moon of Vaxxis 5 and obtain the fortune in power crystals guarded by many new foes.
The project is about 75% done with sound and music being the last items to be completed. I will try to get some screen shots up. I noticed some posts about a space scenario which this is and give free use of any of the graphics to anyone in the community to use. I've also picked up considerable expertise in modifying sprites and graphics and will be glad to share that knowledge with the forum. By the way, you can indeed go outside the limits of platforms and still have them work correctly. Dominator has a platform 3 bricks high and several platforms 3 bricks wide.

As we all know, Jack is often travelling. While he was walking through a large forest, he suddenly came across a lot of houses, grouped together somewhere deep in the woods. After some walking around he realized it was a former holiday village. He liked to get into those houses, but they all seemed to be closed. At last, he found a red bungalow that he could climb on. And by the chimney he could enter that house. Once he was inside, there were ... closed doors ... and keys. At the end he had one key left, so he could enter one of the other houses.

Size: since version 3.0 two green houses are added

Difficulty-degree: easy (and normal at a few places)
