I don't believe we have any keys in secret areas in MM HD. I'm pretty sure that was deliberate. I think it should be possible to get all the treasure for a mansion. I don't think it should be easy *especially* for a Hard mansion. There are other Hard mansions where one has to make similar choices.
I'm going almost done looking at NM Easy... and I'll jump past Normal and go straight to Hard to take a closer look.
tricksrunning around the nightmare mansion, too. I believe it's part of the mansion, intentional... and annoying, but part of how the mansion was designed. I believe the treasure behind the red door you mention is a bonus for passing up on an optional (but very convenient) red door elsewhere.
