Jacob's idea isn't bad.
Another option is allowing Command-1 through Command-6 to drop an item. (Or maybe simply number keys 1-6, without the command key?) It'll drop the item in that spot. HOWEVER, the item will return to its *original* location when dropped. It won't end up in the spot where Jack currently is. A confirmation dialog would ask
Another option is just make the D key drop any shield you have in your inventory. Again, it'd return to its original location.
But I'm not sure this is any better than Jacob's suggestion.
