I dearly wish there was an ability to drop a shield or 2 to make room for a key?

I can't tell you how many times I've had to backtrack (sometimes quite a ways) to find a critter to waste a shield on so I can go back and get the key I want. 

It doesn't matter which mansion; it's come up for me over and over with the MM games (both 1 and 2).

I think it is a part of the game. If you are good and don't need the shields you have to be aware that you might have to many of them and therefore make sure to use them now and then. That is what I do.

An easy, seamless way to fix this is to make keys replace shields in your inventory if you're out of space.

If you have too many keys and can't pick up the extra key, that's just a poor mansion design. Smile But, if you have extra shields, you are obviously a good player and won't mind if your shields are replaced by keys.

Isn't limited inventory space part of the game? That's why there are backpacks.

When I think of it I always try to put the shields on places where you can avoid them if you don't want them.

The dropping shield option may sabotage a few of Freddy's mansions, too (at least one). Has anyone heard of Freddy lately by the way?

Jacob's idea isn't bad.

Another option is allowing Command-1 through Command-6 to drop an item. (Or maybe simply number keys 1-6, without the command key?) It'll drop the item in that spot. HOWEVER, the item will return to its *original* location when dropped. It won't end up in the spot where Jack currently is. A confirmation dialog would ask
Are you sure you want to drop the red key?
(or whatever item is in that slot)

Another option is just make the D key drop any shield you have in your inventory. Again, it'd return to its original location.

But I'm not sure this is any better than Jacob's suggestion.

I like Jacob's suggestion, too. Vern's is good, but seems more complicated.

It would require a FAQ entry, I suppose. Wink ... and I am now a cheerleader for thoroughly reading the FAQ.

Yes, but sometimes it is impossible and then you are stuck if the key is needed to move on, like in
The Great Escape
easy. If you arrive in room 17103 with all slots filled with shields you cannot get the red key and you cannot run back for monsters to kill if you have pulled the middle-ledge lever in room 17102.
