Basically I always do it as you said..... if it works I don't change a thing.
(I did update to 10.4.11 though, a couple of days ago.... but that's just a minor step I could risk).

Pro Tools Projectin the old days (of the 882/20 interface) and it worked fine for several years. But I needed to upgrade (channelwise) which meant either going down the full ProTools hi-end route (too expensive) or do something different.
