Layers?
by Gaelmac

I make my own littles mansions for many mounths, And it's just today i discover layers  :-X !!! I know with them i can hide Jack or other things, or make ladders. But is the someone who can explain me better how do they work ?  Smile

------------------------

Re: Layers?
by brell

Welcome on the boards, Gaelmac.  Have you read the level builder manuals that came with the game in the Level Builder Docs folder?  The layers are explained there.  In short you use the following layers:0 for background4 is the main building layer5 is mainly used for ladders6 is for foreground (in front of Jack).Hope this helps

Thanks very well. It's like in Photoshop in fact ! Quite Easy!  :Smile

music problem...
by Mikee

Yeah, i have a music problem  SadI would to make that in that music folder of MM, but when I have made this and write the right number at the music and at the mansion, i hear not from the music. I don't know but it's a midi File. I had to try this in a mp3 file but i can't hear the music. And now what i must make?  Undecided

------------------------

Re: music problem...
by aquaMat

Mikee,MM can't handle MIDI files. You must put an AUDIO file (in mp3 format) into the Game Data > Music folder, assigned with the correct number and then everything will work just fine.

------------------------

Re: music problem...
by Mikee

Sad yeah aqua that i know! But I would that music make in the mansion but i can't its an midi File? I have asked and now what i must do to i can make this music in the mansion???

------------------------

Re: music problem...
by aquaMat

I'm not sure I understand correctly what you're asking ?!Could you maybe repeat the question in German ?If you're asking how you could use the music even if it is a MIDI file, well, that is possible but I wouldn't recommend it.What you need to do:1. You need a MIDI-capable synthesizer (either as hardware or as a software synth application within your computer).2. You'll have that synthesizer play the MIDI file in question and3. Record the output as an audio file.4. The resulting audio file will most probably be in AIFF format, Stereo, 16 bit / 44,1 kHz... В which means you have to...5. Convert the AIFF audio into the mp3 format, using a good converter application such as Audacity etc.You see it's not that easy and I'm pretty sure it is not worth all the hassle, since most MIDI files sound really poor, as long as you do not use a high class synthesizer with good sounds. Why don't you use a music file that is already in mp3 format (and to which you have the rights, of course) ??

------------------------

Re: music problem...
by Mikee

yeah, aqua i send you a PM for this of german... В Smile

------------------------

Re: music problem...
by aquaMat

Mikee, the question you sent me in German is indeed what I suspected it to be....so the answer is already above.DE: В Die Antwort steht schon in obigem Post von mir (in Englisch). Wenn Du willst, kann ich sie dir aber nochmal in Deutsch via PM senden !?

------------------------

Re: music problem...
by Mikee

hmmm... I know aqua that Midi File not go in MM but how I can make that to a mp.3 File??? >Sad

------------------------

Re: music problem...

Mikee, das habe ich doch oben schon beschrieben !!!Ich werde es Dir aber nochmal via PM in deutsch senden.

Feeling much better all. Good enough to dust off a custom art mansion.Early January release.....Was going to be Search For Jack but since I still haven't come up with a good Jill, Jack is still in. Had some fairly significant surgical procedures performed. Good news is that things weren't quite as dire as at first thought to be. Suffice it to say I've recovered most of the way and my wife has let me use my computers again. Just not allowed to get upset.Anyway, thanks for the welcome back. Looking forward to finishing up my mansion backlog......Joe B

Re: Guess Who.........
by joeb

OK Folks, have just added the Treasure Rooms to Radeka and Matt and I will be playing today looking for JS, cheap deaths, ALTHOUGH, I will say this...Radeka is the hardest mansion we've put together so far. I've included LOTS of coinage so you should be able to make it through. It's chock full of "sneaky" things as Matt calls them (aka what others may call cheap deaths) but just about ALL of them involve spiders and WHERE THERE ARE WEBS THERE ARE SPIDERS, so they're not cheap deaths. You just need to pay attention. There is also a small snow mountain where it's possible to get whiteout. FYI, I'm SURE that purists out there will comment on the graphics so I'll say upfront I'll look at all the comments but I won't be drawn into that looks bad, mine is better thread.Sometime in the next 24 hours I am going to send the mansion off to Freddy and Brell for posting approval. Then I'll be doing some old mansion cleanup.Best of the New Year to all!!!!!!!!mattb & joebps Leon,There are lots of graphics in the file that you (or anyone for that matter) can use. I'm really pleased with the way the slime snakes, swamp bricks and swamp platforms came out.mj

I am looking forward to my Jack's Radeka March composed and conducted by Joe & Matt Strauss! WinkWhen you send your mansion to us, please give us a good, but small text to add on the downloadpage, with that spider-web-warning. Unless you made a BBB somewhere in the beginning of Radeka. Thx.

Background maker: Painter X
by Wingy

I just got a trial version of Painter X (www.corel.com) is great for making backgrounds for Midnight Mansion. There's a free trial there. This image I painted in 3 minutes... If I put a bit more effort into it, then it would become a great background for Midnight Mansion.I first paint-bucketed the background dark blue, then did a few angled strokes of an oil brush with a slightly brighter blue to make that nice Midnight sky. The ground I used a green and a normal brush, and the trees on the ground where just  dark-greenish-brown color. The stars where just white dots, just clicked with a normal brush at a reasonable size. The moon, was a nice detail. It was like doing the star, (just clicking once, not dragging, with a bigger brush) Then I got a smaller brush and drew the craters and stuff on the moon with a normal grey tone. Then I got this picture... took me 3 minutes.

Re: Custom graphic Help

The best person to help you is of course ... Joe.Now, yesterday we received the good news from Joe that he will be back within a few weeks. So the easiest way is to wait a little bit.

------------------------

Re: Custom graphic Help
by joeb

WELL.............Maybe not a couple of weeks. How is everyone doing? I had some health hiccups but I'm back around now. I was going to wait awhile longer but I got such nice emails from everyone that I decided to make a quick stop in. I'll be stopping in occasionally for a month or so (PT will be taking some time) but I'll definitely will be back. Plus I still have 3 or 4 mansions to complete and get posted.Again, thanks for all the kind thoughts and I'm really looking forward to getting back into the MM community.Leon, like Freddy said, check out the thread in this forum area for the docs I put in here on graphics. After you read that feel free to post any further questions and I'll see if I can help out.Later guys В 8-) 8-)Joe B

Does anyone know how to use invisible bricks? Undecided

------------------------

Re: invisible bricks
by Mikee

You can make invisible bricks on layer 0,5 and 6, I think, lol. On layer 6 you can make secrets, so you can make a option for this, you must only look at extras. Then you can make the Bricks are full or half or so xD maybe Brell or Freddy can better translate that...

I usually use Color It! TongueNice backgrounds. Might use them, sometimes. But the thing we really need... is new Characters! Artists, get your brushes!I've done my Ted charater, (Look at my Avatar) Tongue and Joeb has done his nice JAC and in that StarCraft thing I made I used a effect in Photoshop to put a force-feild around Jack so he could survive in space. If only we had some crazy-good artist who could make us some more charaters...*Idea* Or... we could all bribe Jacob (the artist of MM) to make us some more charaters! Tongue :Smile ;D Big Grin

Re: New Backgrounds!!!
by Wingy

Hmm... I see you dragged the icon from the custom mansions into some of the backgrounds. I see you wanted people to use this in the opening part or intro of the mansion, and you're looking at the mansion in the distance. If I where you, I'd go around the edges of the mansion icon and get rid of the white transparent stuff before you added it to the picture. It would look abit nicer. But it's fine anyways. SmileNotice: If I remember correctly, the backgrounds will tile if it's too small! A standard background should be at least 640x432. That's the size of the built-in backgrounds.I tried that application you used. It's nice! It's a perfect coloring program. If you want to do more complex backgrounds like Joeb's dominator with that nice-3d stuff on the moon, you should get the nice, (now free) Bryce 5. There's a tread with the address to where you download it somewhere in the Art area.I usually use gradients that have colors from a darker blue to a light blue for my backgrounds. I use Color It! 3.0 for that.WingyP.S. Love that half water/half sky effect.  Wink

All,Remember I said that you could get really great software at a great price at certain times?Well this is one of those times...www.daz3d.comDAZ is GIVING away Bryce 5.5 for FREE. You can upgrade to the full version of 6 for $19.95Just an FYI.....Joe B

------------------------

Re: FREE SOFTWARE
by ryos

Dang, that's awesome. My Bryce was stuck at version 3, which didn't even really run under Classic (wireframe drawing was unusably slow). This makes me happy if only for nostalgic reasons. I'm downloading as we speak.Too bad I don't really have time for that sort of thing these days. Should still be fun to give it another whirl and see if some of my old scenes still open and render properly. Smile

------------------------

Re: FREE SOFTWARE

Joe, could you give us a short description on the difference between Bryce and DAZStudio? В Which one would we use to create background pics?

------------------------

Re: FREE SOFTWARE

Wow, thats a deal. My brother bought Bryce 5.0 for $200 afew years ago!  :o

------------------------

Re: FREE SOFTWARE

I registered yesterday and they still haven't sent me a serial number. Sad Can't really complain since it's free, but still...

------------------------

Re: FREE SOFTWARE
by joeb

Bryce vs DAZ.......Think of DAZ as the actors guild and Bryce as the set designers. You can use things from DAZ in Bryce (actually the interface between the 2 has been VASTLY simplified) and visa versa but what they do best is what I describe above. For instance in GH the opening "room" has the castle in the mountains (the new version of Bryce actually uses that castle on the box cover and splash screen). The castle is from DAZ (Shroom Castle). I played around with elements of Shroom in DAZ until I got it correct and got the lighting figured out. I exported it as an object file with all the scene elements (lights, textures, etc.)In Bryce I designed the mountains from scratch using the Terrain Editor until I got what I felt was a good place for the castle to sit. I played with the atmospherics (fog, haze, ambient lighting, sun position) until I got it the way I wanted it.Then I imported the castle object, scaled it and placed it where I wanted. I then moved the camera around to get all the scenes (including the ones where the castle isn't visible) and saved them as jpegs. What's cool about this method is that the scenes are consistent as you "move" around and up Ghost Mountain because you're really IN the scene.I then did post work in Photoshop using the Alien Skin Eye Candy 5: Nature filters, Smoke (add depth to the fog) and Snow Drift for the snow. I used the Alien Skin Xenofex 2 filters, Cracks (for the lava channels down the mountain), Little Fluffy Clouds for the clouds.Phew.......But I have gotten a TON of positive comments on the GH backgrounds and they really speak for taking a little extra time to setup. If anyone is interested I have the source files, Bryce, DAZ and Photoshop laying around if you're interested (email me). As I mentioned the Bryce promotion was well worth the time to register at DAZ and DAZ Studio has ALWAYS been free. DAZ also has weekly free objects. Bryce and DAZ are not tools that you just go into and use right away without taking time to use them but they are POWERFUL! There is a HUGE forum that you can get to from DAZ that has links to lots of free content and you can get questions answered quickly. AND there are a bunch of free tutorials. My forum ID is joeb3651And you can always email me......HTH,Joe B
