An Apple employee was just telling me today of another developer -- I probably shouldn't say who -- whose worse-selling iPhone app sells 500-1000 units a day. A DAY. What the heck?! Granted, it's only 99 cents, but that's still around 375 dollars or more a day after Apple gets its cut. Holy cow.

Makes me wonder if I should look into porting Midnight Mansion to the iPhone. The iPhone has half the resolution of Midnight Mansion's current resolution, so it would probably look just great on the iPhone. And unlike my latest game Insectoid, which requires a 1.2 GHz computer or faster to run (and even then barely makes it), Midnight Mansion's system requirements are much lighter... the game would perform just fine on the iPhone.

I'm not sure what would be involved in porting it... how much work it would be... but I'm starting to wonder about it, having heard of those crazy sales figures. Of course, not all iPhone games are a success -- some have barely made the author $500 in return, but Midnight Mansion could really fill a niche in that market.

The only question is if it makes *sense*, given the controls.... up, down, left, right, jump, and action... how would that translate to the iPhone? I could superimpose a control pad over the screen, but I'm not sure if that would work well. Or have players tilt left/right/up/down to move Jack, and jolt the iPhone up real quick to make him Jump. Maybe tap the screen for action. OR maybe touch the screen to Jack's left or right to make him walk in that direction... he walks/climbs towards your touch. Maybe one of those would work... hard to know without trying it though.

Thoughts?
| Who wants to BETA Jacques' Revenge? |

Hi everybody!

So this is what happened: After my first version of
Jacques Revenge
- which is the sequel to
Palais Pompomrouge
, for those who don't know - got corrupted I redid the whole thing again and ALMOST finished, when the second file, too, suddenly became corrupted. Luckily this time I had a back up. But this one also showed the symptoms: I wasn't able to add a new room? I don't know why. Total room number is less than MM&M, sprite number too, so no limitations were broken.

Anyways: The storyline was at a crucial and decisive moment at that time, so what I did is, I decided to make
Jacques Revenge
a two-part-mansion. I was able to create a somewhat satisfying ending with the first part and have now started to work on the second part. the Second part will be smaller than the first but it might (just might) be a tiny bit harder. We'll see.

This means, of course, that the first part of the mansion is now up for grabs for eager beta-testers. The mansion is pretty big (444 rooms) with more than 150.000 in gold to be made (if you find all the secrets).

The story follows the adventures of Jacques Moilone, a master thief from Paris, during the time of the French Revolution. If you haven't played Palais Pompomrouge yet, I don't want to give away too much and wont go into the story. If you haven't played Pompomrouge because you heard it was too hard or because you tried and were frustrated after a while: I'll be sending the announced EASY version of Pompomrouge to the Admin sometime today. Easy means less beasties, a bit more money, less crazy jumps and less insane deaths. It does not mean total sissification and candystriping of everything that seemed a bit demanding, so especially in areas where you rip off tons of gold from a secret space, you still might encounter some heavy monster traffic or the occasional difficult jump.

So I'd advice you to go and grab the easy version Pompomrouge (as soon as it is up) and give it a try. Play it, so you'll better feel into the story of the upcoming sequel.

In the meantime I'd like to see some hands! Who wants to BETA-test
Jacques Revenge
?

| A few minor problems in Veronica's Ladders |

As I have already pointed out in my post in the
Jack In Spider World
thread I feel Veronica's first mansions could have needed a bit more testing to iron out some of the problems.

In Veronica's Ladders it's especially some of those ladders that have been (deliberately or not) designed with additional and sometimes 'faulty' ladder tiles which - more often than not - result in cheap deaths.

Whereas in the first few instances it seems to be deliberately (severals ladders built net-like next to another - made to look like a
wooden garden wall
- type contraption (for need of a better word)) in later rooms there is often just one or two additional ladder-tile(s), apparently randomly placed....which often prevents Jack from accessing the ladder correctly - and ultiumately he falls to his death.

For a mansion that is meant to be
Easy to Normal
this isn't acceptable, IMHO.

I also remember a couple of cheap deaths, and a few other issues - like doors Jack can jump over, other doors that do not open properly - but unfortunatley didn't take notes of room numbers.
And now that I think of it - the two last-mentioned issues could be in Spider World......... I'll have to re-check.

Veronica - please don't get me wrong. I don't mention any of this to discourage you or dampen your enthusiasm or anything. I also don't put the
blame
on you...... because as I said - for a new designer there are many potential mistakes to make (and you defintely didn't make much!)..... it's just that I feel the beta-testing could have been a bit more extensive.

(Which, by the way, surprises me - 'cause I know that Semi-Native is usually a good beta-tester.)
