Midnight Mansion HD: Episode 1 download link (beta 1)
#1
Here is the link to beta 1:

www.actionsoft.com/files/temp/MidnightMansionHDbeta1.zip

Currently this is
Episode 1
only. I will upload Episode 2 once Episode 1 has been tested a little bit. Episode 1 will sell on the Mac App Store for $4.99, while Episode 2 will likely sell for around $7.99 to $9.99. When you have both episodes, you'll have the
complete game
. I split it up to make the barrier to purchase a bit lower ($4.99 versus $20). Once you purchase both episodes, both copies will be upgraded to run all the mansions, so it'll be just as convenient as before.

This is the version exactly as a Mac App Store customer would receive it upon purchasing, except that
Game Data
will be inside the app.

There are a few things I need to tidy up still, but for the most part consider this finished.

The main things:

- In Hint House, you'll see a floating question mark where each tip is. Right now, tips are invisible.

- Tomb of Princes Easy is missing. I have to finish this. For now, don't try to play it.

Other than that, please try anything and everything you can to break the game. Do note that this is not about testing *mansions* as much as it is about testing the *game engine*. This is an entirely new engine, Universal Binary, Open-GL accelerated, and there can be lots of problems. I've fixed a lot already, but there could be more that I don't know about.

For instance, Command-F toggles fullscreen/windowed. Try toggling this at random times, like when you're reading a sign, or on the map screen, etc. Try pausing on the map screen (this is currently a bug actually). That sort of thing. This isn't about testing mansions so much, but more trying to break the game engine. But, do report mansion problems if you run across any. Rob has already done an excellent job upgrading them.

If you complete any mansions, please send me your movie files. (They are in Home/Library/Application Support/ActionSoft/Midnight Mansion/User Movies/) I will use these to take realistic screenshots of the game. ZIP the movie files before sending them or it won't work.

Please use email to contact me, not PM, if you need to contact me off the forums for some reason:

Other things to test: player profiles, movies (now called
replays
), Options settings, etc. Try in fact changing Options *during* the game. (You can do this now!)

I also forgot to mention: mansions are in a new format, but are easily converted. So old-format mansions CAN be played in this version. You just need a tool called Rezycle. Google it or I can post a link later. Gotta run out the door right now.

The Mansion Level Builder is NOT included in this release because it's not universal binary... that will be a big project that I'll do later. For now, you have to use the old mansion level builder, and convert your mansion to the new format when you're done making changes.

I can only play it windowed. It plays impossibly slowly fullscreen on my iMac (Processor 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4GB 1067MHz DDR3).

Just a small bug, when switching to full-screen on the Actionsoft screen (when you open the game) the Actionsoft and splash screen stay the same resolution as before but goes to the bottom left hand corner with a massive black space around it but it then sorts itself out on the main screen

I tried to do it again so I could get a screenshot, but it's not doing it anymore

I've found another little bug, When you're in Full-screen and click change player, it will take you out of full-screen (I think that's supposed to happen) but when you click cancel and goes back to full-screen, half of the background sounds appear, for me it was the howling and the crickets but the thunder remained.

Just wondering, but is there supposed to be any music at the moment?

If so, it's not playing for me at all

Nevermind, the Toggle Music Option was Off as Default

Just one more thing before I head off, at the beginning of every Mansions, it gives an error saying the Movie File Couldn't be Opened but when I go to play it, everything seems to be fine

Other than that, I'm pretty impressed with the whole upgrade, it almost feels like a new game

And sorry for the double/triple posting

Cheers
Leon

This confused me a little at first, too. Maybe Vern was talking about the visual indicator that let's you know that there is a tip at the location (before you actually are on that spot). In earlier versions there was a sign where every tip was.

Unlike regular signs, you didn't have to press your action key to read the message. You walked across it, and the tip was displayed. Now the visual indicator is invisible. The idea was that tips should be distinguishable from signs. Where signs could be verbose, tips would be fairly terse.

It makes me wonder if an exclamation mark might be better for tips considering what question marks are used for in MM2.

I can't even get a mansion to start. I keep getting the error message about the mansion has been modified, download a fresh copy. I've downloaded the game 3 times and haven't touched it in any way. And I can't open a mansion using
Open Mansion
because I haven't purchased the game.

I'm using OS 10.5.8

What is your display's maximum resolution?

Vern, any idea what could be causing my problem? I seem to be the only one having it.
