Windowed mode drawing bug
#1
Here's an oddball for you. Set the screen resolution to 640x480 and hold down option when the game starts up to start in windowed mode. The game should position the game window off the top of the screen to avoid clipping on the bottom. Start a game, and start running around. What do you see?

The effect is quite weird. It's like the game draws the room in the proper place, but Jack exists in a separate plane that is offset by about the amount the window is positioned off the top of the screen. When he runs around, he leaves a trail of offset graphics in his wake.

I discovered this because, for the first time ever, I tried playing Midnight Mansion on a widescreen monitor and found the stretching at 640x480 quite unacceptable. I set the lowest 16:10 resolution I could see (800x500), then started the game up in windowed mode.

Obviously, this is not a very common bug, so you may or may not want to fix it before the expansion pack ships. Smile

(It happened in MM 1.0.8, not an XP beta, but I figured it was probably present there too.)

That's happened to me and I never bothered to say anything about it... I think it's something with the finder and screensize etc., but I'm not sure.

I always play in a window with 1680x1050 and millions of colors. Never encoutered this problem.

Re: Brell: You'll only encounter it if the available vertical resolution of the screen (the menubar is not
available
) is less than the size of the windowed-mode window.

I've since found that the best settings to use are to let MM set the screen to 800x500 and NOT play in windowed mode. I don't know why I didn't think of that in the first place; I must have been an idiot. Nevertheless, the bug stands. Wink

Interesting.

We never discussed this, screen resolutions.

I play - right from the beginning of MM - always in full-screen mode, but let the game switch to 640 x 480 (on a 19
monitor, normally running with 1280 x 960 (75 Hz) w/ 16 millions of colors). Never ever had a problem.

The only problems I had, was when I tried to switch the EDITOR into the so-called
full-screen mode", which isn't a full-screen mode at all. (But we had discussed that one before).

BTW, brell: Why do you deliberately rob yourself of a big part of the playing experience by playing MM in a window ???
I always felt the game only really shines in full-screen mode, at nighttime, with the room lights turned off. Only then you see the full depth of the dark background tiles etc.

To play a mansion I completely agree. Roomlights out and no TV or HiFi. Only full-screen MM with sounds and music on.

But for beta-testing of course in a window, to be able to take notes and/or send/receive emails during
work
.
