Falling into lava - for SoItBegins
#1
SoItBegins -- a while ago you reported this:
-------
Also, I discovered a new item that seems slightly off: If Jack dies by falling past the boundary of the screen, and enters the next screen at such a trajectory that he falls into a lava pit, Jack simply falls straight in w/o splashing.
The same occurs if Jack is killed by a zapper beam and falls into a lava pit (on the same screen); he doesn't splash, he just... falls in.
-------

I've been unable to duplicate this. I'm attaching my test mansion I created to try jumping into different types of lava. I had formerly also tried jumping in from a room above this, and also without the lava at the top of the lower screen -- so Jack landed in the lower lava pool. Nothing resulted in the problem you describe.

Where have you seen this specifically in the game? Can you repeat it?

I believe it was in Spider Palace Hard, or Nightmare Mansion hard (can't remember which offhand). I'll check and see if I can find the locations that caused this.

Okay. I was able to get the glitch to occur in rooms 17496/17696 of Spider Palace Hard. If Jack walks off the left ledge, he will fall into the lava pit normally— but if he hits the skeleton fish first (which he will, because of the timing), he will die from the fish and his corpse will fall through the lava instead.

The gist of it is that, when Jack dies by some method other than lava (an enterprising bird, or a zapper beam, perhaps), and then the corpse somehow winds up in lava before it's had time to 'settle', the corpse will fall right through the lava instead of settling and splashing in.

EDIT: Second image added. Jack has just fallen through the left lava pit. Note how the pit's skeleton fish is MIA.

(MIA = Missing In Action.)
The problem is that if Jack dies via a monster or a zapper beam or something, then falls into lava before his corpse has gone from a standing skeleton to a pile of bones (which only happens to a corpse when it lands on a flat surface), then he will fall through the lava without splashing into it, like he should.

Here's a movie to show what happens.

Does it splash in earlier MMs? I have not thought about this at all.

I have not noticed this in the original MM1 (or MM2 for that matter). Is this really a problem?

I would certainly categorize it as a minor problem, but it is a bit jarring when it happens.

Yeah it's always been this way. It's one of those things that would probably be a pain (i.e. several hours or more of work) to try to fix.
