How do you open a mansion in the level builder?
#21
I still had problems with Three Way Mansion, which is much older than BtSO. After replacing the old signs and upgrading with Rezycle a new pict resource was made, which killed the HD application. By deleting that resource everything was OK. Strange.

Usually that's a sign of custom graphics in a mansion. Are you sure you weren't doing anything like that?

DearRob, I wouldn't even know how to begin to make custom graphics Wink
Besides, before changing any signs, no pict resource was made and the mansion started up normally but then the game quit on any sign.

Strange. I'd have to see the HD version of the mansion in the
it bombs the game
state to see what's going on. Feel free to send it when it's in this condition if you want me to look into it further.

It's *possible* that the
preview picts
from the level builder might cause it to not work. I doubt that... but it's possible. Would have to check.

Very strange. Here is what I just did with three-way mansion, and it sounds like it took less effort than what you did Brell:

1.  I
unpacked
the mansion using rezycle
2.  I opened the 'TEXT' directory and looked at all oddly named files, and I renamed them (see before and after images).
3. I opened the mansion and started playing. That's *all* I did, and it worked fine.

Here's another possibility I did using Rezilla:

1. Open the original mansion file with rezilla.
2. Open the TEXT resource branch.
3. Select a resources, and hit CMD-I (Get Info...)
4. Delete the Name for each Entry
5. Save the resource fork.
6. Unpack mansion with rezycle (or not). You can continue to update the mansion if you like until you're ready to make it available to players who use MM HD, or you're ready to upgrade to Lion.

Something should be easily apparent here. It's super easy to fix the TEXT resources up without resorting to Rezilla. Easier than using Rezilla. Also, I never got any additional PICT resources generated, I'm going to try playing with that a little.

The following images show the contents of the 'TEXT' resource directory once extracted using rezycle, and then what they looked like after I renamed them.

OK, so we have more than one way to fix this problem. It seems to me that Rob's way is easier.
I will send you the malfunctioning version, Vern.

Yes, if you see names added to any .txt files, just remove the extra names, like Rob did, and it will work properly. Rob's fix is fine -- no need to do it using a resource editor.

HOWEVER -- the advantage to using a resource editor is that you will be fixing the *original* file. Meaning, if you ever need to export that same mansion again (i.e. make small modifications to the original), you won't have to fix the same problem *again* later, every time you export it. So THIS is a good reason to use a resource editor. Fix it once this way, and you'll never have to fix it for that mansion again. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks, Vern - I thought about this the other day, and was going to add it, but completely forgot. It's a great point. This fix should only really happen if you have no other way to edit your mansion (you've upgraded to Lion, perhaps).
