I'll try that.
The only way I ever managed that room was the way Surcouf intended it, which is to start with the green switch on the ground floor.
But before he told me that, I too always assumed the bottom green switch should be avoided so it won't open the trap door too soon.
IMHO, without a hint hardly anybody will figure out this room before he runs out of lives.

Is the trapdoor supposed to keep the key from falling into the lava until you reach the red button? Thanks.

No. You cannot reach the red button without opening the trapdoor first. It is a question of timing.
