Beta 2 - Slowdown [TODO/Research]
#11
Something I haven't heard back from anyone yet is this: do you experience slowdowns on *other* screens when fullscreen too?

For instance, when on the Title Screen or Difficulty screen, does the mouse cursor respond really smoothly, or is it somewhat more sluggish? (To compare, play the game and pause, and see how fast the ghoul hand cursor moves here.)

Also, push the M key to bring up the map while playing. Is it smooth to drag this around, or sluggish? (Again, to compare, try doing it in windowed mode, so you know what it's like normally.)

Can everyone who has a slowdown when fullscreen please try the two tests in this download?

www.actionsoft.com/files/temp/OpenGLtests.zip

You'll need to run it for a few seconds, then push Esc to quit. In the Terminal window that opened when you double-clicked the app, you should now see something like:

SPINNING CUBE FRAME RATE (WINDOWED):
1259.84 frames per second

Let me know what frame rates you're seeing for each. Do note that windowed well be several times faster than fullscreen. I get:

Fullscreen: 375 frames per second
Windowed: 1259 frames per second

This is to be expected, given that the windowed version draws much less data. But if you get something like 18 fps for fullscreen, something's up...

Huh.. I thought I sent you an email with the info. At any rate, no... just the mansions. The other screens seem fine, even when Jack is slow in a mansion.

I didn't notice any big difference. It seemed about the same to me.

switching to windowed and back to fullscreen, does it consistently work for you now when you do that switch? If so, maybe the 800x600 resolution is helping...

It also works much more frequently for me as well. In fact, what I've been doing is holding down CMD-F, and letting it toggle back and forth a few times. So far, without fail, after I've finished that, and gone full screen everything's been fine.

Whoa!!! So it's really slow too! I wasn't expecting that. That means it's an SDL issue -- something basically out of my control until Sam gets around to fixing it. I'll get on reporting it as an official SDL bug ASAP.

Leon and Mapman -- if you can confirm Rob's results (run the OpenGL test I linked to above) that would be great!!

Very odd that all it takes is one or two windowed/full-screen toggles, and it works fine. At least as far as mansions go.

Thanks Rob. That works for me as well. A couple of toggles back and forth and I'm getting 62fps full screen.
