Beta 4: Dr. Demented's Den

Do you mean you were able to get to 16694 in the beginning when it was dark? Hmmm... that shouldn't have been possible. I thought I had a gray door blocking it that would only open from the other side. Even so, that one isn't all that far from the previous one. I'll check this out.

I also agree with the one in 16309, but I'll think about it some more tonight.

Rob you're right... probably I remember the previous version... sorry

No apology necessary - you were right. When I went and checked last night, it was just as you said. I was able to get through that gray door. The trigger may have been too close to the door or something, so I fixed it. I'm glad you mentioned it. I probably wouldn't have thought to check it out.

Just finished the latest Hard version with $78,350 and 100% secrets. Yay!!!

Found a couple things:

15102 I've still never managed to get the ghoul heads through the conveyor belts to get them to the flame. They're too close together and block them.

16510 Jack Stuck (see pic). Jack fell off the ledge and died trying to get back onto the blue bat platform which brought him to that point. The bat platform did not reappear.

Congrats! Just in time for me to make it even easier after feedback from Vern.

I will continue to make minor changes to the one you have been testing, and I'm going to keep it as an X-Hard custom mansion.  No need to try and distinguish between the two. If you see something in the Hard version, I will simply check to see if it also applies to the other version as well.  It would really be a shame to lose all the work that went into it, so I don't intend to.

Vern is going through and sending me lots of comments privately - and I almost wish it were public because I think you and margherita would appreciate them. Very entertaining. It would be even more entertaining if it didn't mean that I had to make a bunch of changes. I really laughed when I thought that what he looked at had already been made a lot easier.

I would ask that you spot check certain areas initially, if you could.

1.) Area 2, the yellow key that you had to do a lot of backtracking for has been moved back to it's original location. The red key which had been there, has been moved to the same general area where the yellow key had been, but the backtracking aspect has been removed. that lower level is no longer accessible from below, and only from above.

2.) As you said earlier, the floating lever, lever on falling platform, lever on vanishing platform (either kind) didn't pass muster. So, I've been going through and ripping them out/replacing each platform type with something more solid. Sigh... This was one of the reasons I decided to start keeping an X-Hard version (which may or may not end up as a custom mansion included with the game). The first use and accompanying explanations are all gone now. I believe there is only one use of a lever on a falling platform - the long hallway at the bottom of area 5 leading to the gorgon key room. It will probably go, too. I just haven't removed it yet. All other locations have already been changed (including the one goblin room that utilizes them) There, I simply removed the two levers and accompanying zappers.

3) Area 3 will probably have the most changes, I believe. As I've done before, I'm trying to tone things down incrementally, unfortunately... I've just about run out of time, so area 3 (zapper area) will have to be spot checked.

Notable changes so far:

- 15699 is a little easier (I laughed at many of Vern's comments on this room) Changes: vanishing platforms have been slightly extended to make them easier to land on. Middle group of platforms moves a bit slower now. All platforms in this room now move at the same rate of speed.

- 15698 Removed one of the zappers here. Spaced out remainder accordingly.

  - 15499 is in the process of being revamped. No changes yet. Same thing with 15502

  - Some structural changes to 15504 (somewhat disappointing...)

  - Minor structural changes to 15304, you'll probably spot them immediately.

- Minor changes to 15303 and 15503. Two ladders were removed, one or two zappers removed. No levers on any non-solid bases. Paintings added (some of these will have hidden BBB when I'm done). I think the same flavor remains, but it's just easier.

Regarding 15102... I wonder if you're going about this one the right way, and if not I wonder how I could make it more clear. I don't want the puzzle to be impossible - I could always reduce it to one ghoul to take some of the tedium away.... yeah.. OK done.

The way I tackle this room, is I go up on the right side, and attract the ghouls over to that side and wait til they are both lower than the top-most level.

Then I head down and around to the other side and try to get the ghouls attention so that they are approaching from the right. Sometimes it involves jumping into their cage. I wait until they are just approaching the falling platform, and then jump on it, and ride it all the way down, as soon as I get down I'll head to the left. The timing is a little tricky, but it doesn't have to be absolutely precise since I enlarged the platform and widened the gap a while back.

The ghouls should be close to the falling platform that they will follow down, and eventually be consumed by the flame.

I'm *very* happy you and margherita made it to the end with 100% secrets before I made these changes. Incidentally... I'm not upset by any of these changes, and I hope that does come across in this post. Just a little tired is all.

;D

Edit: cleaned up first few paragraphs for readability

That's odd.. I wonder why. I've taken a blue platform to other screens before, had them leave, and they've reappeared. Not sure what happened here, but just in case, I'm going to get rid of both of the gray doors to the left and to the right of the enclosed center area. I can't think of any reason they need to be there.

OK... New version of mansion. Area 3 is... different, nearly all of its difficult rooms have been modified (If you've played previously, then you know what I've talking about).

What you might do is modify the file in the Editor to set room 15901 as the start point. Area 4 will be getting the same treatment next and may end up losing a few rooms.

If you are testing this, please only test from 15901 until you get past the red doors in room 15704.

Thanks!

Edit: I expect things to change quickly over the next day or two Hopefully the bulk of the changes will be done by the end of today. Attachment removed - more recent version available.

I was about to test the hard version but you want us to change the starting point I will refrain from testing until you think you are finished changing things.

Is the hard version much different to the Easy and normal version?

Dr Demented's Den Hard is.... much harder than Normal, and about twice its size. Until Yesterday, I thought it was done, but you were right in your post the other day. The hard mansions (I think mansions in general) are harder than the first game.

Vern and I have been going through the hard version, and making it easier. The original mansion as it had been is still available at post 179

https://actionsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=1378

It's going to be included as a custom mansion. The latest mansion that's been posted was after I addressed many of Vern's suggestions for one of the areas. There are still a few more areas that need to be addressed. You don't have to change the starting point - you can start from the beginning. I was just interested to reaction from the specific area for the moment.

If you would like to play the X-Hard version (from the link), I'd welcome that feedback as well. The remaining modifications should be done in about two days to Hard if you wait to play it until then. It might be best actually to wait to play Hard until then so that you can react to the changes all at once, without being influenced by previous games.

I start on the version one can download from here. Even though I am better at hard mansions now I don't think I want too play the x-hard one at present time.
