The problem is that you can't install from a DVD or original installation file since they're 10.6With the MacBook Pros with Retina (from the early 2013 models) it doesn't have the drivers to run previous versions so you need to run it using a VM which is only compatible with OSX Server
I used CCC (http://www.bombich.com) to make a disk image of a working 10.6.8 system that I found on an older mac and installed that on a partition on my new one. Restarted with option pressed and there it was, works like a dream
