I am a kind of Newbie 8-) 
and experience the same so far. Two attempts left me with 10 out of 13 secrets and $ 600 missing.
But I will never give up. Unless Vern did change anything to this mansion, it MUST be possible to find everything, since others could. So it is only a matter of time. And patience. And more patience ...
