Matari: The ladder is not broken. You are in the ladder with Jack in a climbing position. Now press and hold the right arrow, the space bar and the up arrow in this order.

My controls are set as x = space bar. I can honest say that I have tried EVERYTHING and just can't get it. Like I say maybe it is my keyboard

Just wanted to say thank goodness for this thread. I was having the same problem, and with knowing Freddy designed this section, I knew there was some puzzle to solve the key issue.

It is good that an old thread saved your day instead of having to start a new one.

Freddy's puzzles are indeed challenging and thus great fun but as you say they tend to become easier when one has solved a few. Apart from that he is one the best puzzle makers among us builders IMO.
