Thanks for all that, 'Tronic. It makes more sense to me now. I'm still not convinced abstract is more effective than symbolism (the only art that's ever made me feel anything has used symbolism), but I'm willing to give it a shot next time I'm in an art gallery.

My University has one. Though, I've never seen any abstract pieces in there...maybe I just went at the wrong time.

It's really more fun to go to an art museum if you can find someone who's enthusiastic about art and also relatively grounded. It's no fun at all to watch people stroll around nodding at paintings in thoughtful approval, but it's great hanging out in a gallery with somebody who will actually break out in laughter at a clever piece or yell
This painting rocks!
when the mood strikes. I've always felt like high art needed more rock and roll qualities.
