MM2 beta 2 is finally available:

www.actionsoft.com/files/mmsequel/MidnightMansion2Beta2.zip

Version History:

MM Exp Beta 2:
- Sparkles of light appear now when you enter a room that has a hidden key or other object/action, and you must kill monsters to get it to appear.
- Fixed bug where game could crash in rooms containing hidden triggers. This affected the beta most noticably in Leofani Manor Hard, room 16700, but could've easily affected other rooms too.
- Easier to read yellow color for
Difficulty: Normal
text on map screen.
- It's much less likely that Jack can jump, while riding a moving platform, and become
separated
from the platform if he jumps right as it is moving between rooms.
- Fix to hopefully keep Jack's vertical momentum from allowing him to jump up to areas he's not supposed to be able to reach, due to jumping while going up on a moving platform.
- Added
Find sprites in mansion…
to Special menu in the editor. Super useful for things like finding all rooms that contain a lantern, etc.
- Added
Count keys/doors…
to Special menu of editor.
- Fixed an assertion error crash in the editor, GameEditorEvents.c, line 1661 or so.

Tutorial
- Changed signs in rooms 15907 and 15893 to use
grey
instead of
gray
.

Trigger Island
- Various changes that were made prior to beta testing having started.

Dr Demented's Den Normal
- Made conveyor belts in 15502 and 15503 slightly easier.
- Fixed lantern to light up entire mansion.

Blackheart Keep Normal:
16102 - Made jumping onto falling platform easier.
16302 - Made bottom area of this room slightly easier.
16507 - Made a little easier, but still might be too hard for Normal.
16099 - Removed snake -- was too close to room entrance.
15893 - Can no longer get blue key by falling (to your death) from room above.
15704 - Fixed all possible ways to get stuck (forcing suicide) if Jack goes exploring in this room.
16305 - Fixed this room so if Jack climbs down from the top-middle vine, he won't fall through the floor below.

Blackheart Keep Easy:
16494 - Fixed cheap death when entering from the right.
15893 - Can no longer get blue key by falling (to your death) from room above.
15704 - Fixed all possible ways to get stuck (forcing suicide) if Jack goes exploring in this room.
16305 - Same fix as for Normal.

Leofani Manor
• Changed music in various sections in all the difficulties.
• 15905 Easy - Fixed the trigger on the bookcases to only effect the platform on the top part of the room, not the elevator. This bug made it impossible to go back down to the 'main hall' if the trigger activated.
• 16700 Hard - Removed an unnecessary trigger which was causing crashes on various machines.
• 16300 Hard - Made the top-right grey door lever reset when you re-enter the room, so if you die and come back you won't be stuck.
• 16699 All - Moved the vines a bit to prevent some cheap deaths from jumping from the secret.
• 16301 Hard - Made changes to the room, making the red key possible to get now.

Mount Peril
• Added two new sections; 24 rooms, all available for testers to test. (Yes, even with more secrets and save points!)
• 16502 Normal - Fixed a Jack-stuck by jumping from the vine over the left grey door, which could happen most often in the dark.
• 15704 Normal - Slowed the ghosts slightly, making it more normal.
• 15694 Normal - Removed one of the skull spiders, making it more normal.
• 16900 Normal - Added a 20ms pause in the platforms, making it more normal.
• 16699 Normal - Added more conveyor belt tile, making it more normal.
• 16698 Normal - Removed one conveyor belt, replacing it with a normal brick, making it more normal.
• 17300 Normal - Added more conveyor belt tile, making it more normal.
• 15502 Normal - Added slightly more conveyor belt tile, making it more normal.
• 16902 Normal - Added solid tile blocks on the way, and added 90ms more of off time for the zapper beams, making it more normal.
• 17500 Normal - Added a 20ms pause in the platforms, making it more normal, and reduced the speed of the bird, giving players more reaction time who climb down the ladder.
• Added more save points.

Castle Basano
• Changed music in various sections.
• 16906 Easy - Fixed a bug where you couldn't walk down to the red door from the left.
• 16703 Easy - Made it possible to get the money bag in the top right-hand corner.
• 15102 Hard - Fixed a jack stuck, where it is possible to get to the other side of the roof.
• 15889 - 16089 Normal / Easy - Fixed both the Jack stucks in the rooms, where you can jump onto the cliff while taking the elevator.
• 15890 Normal / Easy - Moved that first coin so you can get it if you take the 'secret' route.
• 15494 Easy - Added a ladder instead of falling platforms, incase you miss the platform to continue.
• 15901 Easy - Added another lever, and made them both be able to be pulled more then once.
• 16895 to 16495 Easy - Made each of the levers reset when you re-enter the room, so they don't start up the elevators before Jack can get on them.
• 16495 Easy - Added a secret, so if Jack doesn't have a yellow key and jumped off the platform as he activated it, he won't be stuck.
• 15299 Hard - You can now go back after leaving the room past the yellow door.
• 15697 Hard - Made the
trick
by Lord Basano a bit more obvious.
• 15693 Hard - Reduced speed of the bird by 2, making it easier.
• 15894 Hard - Added a brick in the lava so people can access the red door from the left without the platform there.

Jasperlone Mountains
• Changed music in various sections.
• 14096 Normal - There is a Jack stuck if you ride the falling platform down from the middle without opening the doors above. Added more falling platforms so you can jump back up.
• 'Windy' Tower 13901 to 13301 Normal - Removed some monsters, slowed platforms significantly; too hard for normal.
• 14105 Normal - Repositioned the platform so you can't jump over to the other side without activating the platform.
• Fixed some signs with grammar / spelling issues.
• 15305 Normal - Removed the ghoul, made the platforms wider, making it more normal.
• 14504 Normal - Removed the scorpion.
• 14297 Normal - Made it possible to come back if Jack gets on the platform before disabling the zapper beam.
• 13900 Normal - Removed two of the fish.
• 15097 Normal - Added some bricks to prevent anyone from jumping from the yellow platform to the lower-left place, it isn't meant to be accessed from there, you're meant to ride the platform down.
• 14898 Normal - Made all the levers reset when you leave the room, so the platforms can't be on when you ride in from above with the grey platform.
• Fixed the name in the map. It is Jasperlone, NOT Jasperlane, just to clarify.
• 14910 Normal - Added a secret on the roof, so if you traveled from above you wouldn't end up stuck, but instead find a nice secret which can lead you back to solid ground.
Phew!
Today I finally managed to finish MMM with 500.000 gold! Yay! But: I missed one secret along the way? How's that possible?

Anyways: Since years I've been wondering what the
Crumbs
thing is about. Apparently it is a kind of puzzle, as Brell already wrote that he solved it more than three years ago. But I honestly don't have a clue. Since I am very curious by nature I HAVE TO KNOW what it means. So, is there a way somebody can tell me without destroying the fun for those who still have the energy to go and find out for themselves?

Please? Pretty please?? Pur-leaaaaaaase???

Thanks!

| iPhone 4.0 |

John Gruber writes:

Prior to today’s release of the iPhone OS 4 SDK, section 3.3.1 of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement read, in its entirety:

3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs.

In the new version of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement released by Apple today (and which developers must agree to before downloading the 4.0 SDK beta), section 3.3.1 now reads:

3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited).

My reading of this new language is that cross-compilers, such as the Flash-to-iPhone compiler in Adobe’s upcoming Flash Professional CS5 release, are prohibited. This also bans apps compiled using MonoTouch — a tool that compiles C# and .NET apps to the iPhone. It’s unclear what this means for tools like Titanium and PhoneGap, which let developers write JavaScript code that runs in WebKit inside a native iPhone app wrapper. They might be OK. This tweet from the PhoneGap Twitter account suggests they’re not worried. The folks at Appcelerator realize, though, that they might be out of bounds with Titanium. Ansca’s Corona SDK, which lets you write iPhone apps using Lua, strikes me as out of bounds.

Does this then affect the potential iPhone release of Midnight Mansion?

If so it is a true shame because having played with an iPad, Midnight Mansion is an amazing fit for that platform. Hopefully though this doesn't affect your plans at all.

| Game name? |

After you've had a chance to try the game, let me know what you think about these two possible game names. Which is better?

1) Midnight Mansion 2: Valley of Shadows

2) Midnight Mansion 2: The Haunted Hills

Part of the storyline, by the way, is that Jack is relaxing in his retirement mansion, but notices over time that it seems that treasure is disappearing. Then one day, in an office in his basement, he feels a draft. He goes up to the bookshelf and, feeling a breeze, pushes it aside to see a tunnel! He enters the tunnel to find the map screen you see in the sequel. Someone or something has been stealing his treasure, and he needs to get it back!

So with that storyline in mind, what's the better game name?

Post here for bugs / comments / suggestions for Trigger Island. (This mansion is in the Custom Mansions folder. You must choose Open Mansion to play it.)

Remember to mention the room number (push Command-D to see it in the upper-left corner) and difficulty (Easy Normal, Hard) you are playing.
