New version to test. This version fixes a number (but not all) of the issues in the 1.0.0 Mac App Store release.

www.actionsoft.com/files/temp/MidnightMansion1.0.1b1.zip

I had to change a lot of things to do some of the fixes, and any of them could easily have introduced new problems! So please try all aspects of the game (pause at random times, map screen, switch in and out of fullscreen, Hide and restore, minimize the window, etc.) to see if you can break it. Plus test suspend game, opening saved games, esp. with custom mansions that are in .zip format. Test submitting high scores, etc. Test with custom mansions that quit with an assertion error when a sign wasn't readable, etc.

Version History:

1.0.1b1:
- Fixed game so it no longer fails to load a mansion if there is a 'Pict' folder when the mansion is exported with room preview picts that the level builder uses.
- Fixed bug in shipping version of Episode 2 (Mac App Store) that caused House of Baron Garneau to quit with an assertion error when started on hard difficulty (see above
Pict
fix.)
- Game now returns to Episode 2 map screen if you beat an episode 2 mansion.
- Fixed tile shadows so they are ONLY drawn for brick (wall) tiles, ladders, poles, and vines, conveyor belts, and a few other things -- but NOT for background tiles -- even those drawn in higher layers. Previously, shadows were being drawn for layer 0 tiles that were drawn in higher layers to
hide
things behind them. This no longer happens.
- The gold/silver bricks no longer cast shadows when they are
off
(i.e. a dotted line).
- Fixed bug where game could crash when reading certain signs. (For instance, the sign in the custom mansion Art Minds Mansion, room 1406.)
- Game Over and Beat-The-Mansion music no longer play if sound effects are turned off.
- Pushing Esc on the
Enter your name for a high score
dialog now dismisses (cancels) the dialog, instead of entering the Esc character in the Name field.
-
Enter your name for a high score
dialog remembers your last-entered name for that profile. (Or uses the profile's name if you haven't entered a high score yet.)
- The OK button in
Enter name for high score
dialog is disabled if the name field is empty.
- Optimized Midnight Mansion HD's graphics engine even more, eliminating slowdowns in individual rooms and also resulting in faster redrawing of the in-game map screen as you scroll around.
- If Midnight Mansion HD's framerate ever drops below 55fps right after you enter a new room, the game will do two things to raise it: first, it will remove all coin/key glows and sprite shadows. Usually this is sufficient, even in the most processor-intensive rooms. However, even if that is insufficient, it will reduce the frame rate to 30fps and enable frame-skipping. The difference is almost unnoticeable to the player, other than an initial slowdown for about 1 second after entering the room, and the sudden disappearance of glows and sprite shadows.
- Fixed problems where game wouldn't look for the Midnight Mansion HD Custom Mansions folder in the correct place (or wouldn't even *create* it in the correct location) in some instances.
- Fixed open saved/suspended games so they work even if the original mansion is a .zip mansion.
- When saving a game while playing a mansion in .zip format, .zip is no longer part of the default filename for the saved game.
- Movies (replays) are no longer saved with a .zip extension in the filename if the original mansion was a ZIP. They also work properly when replayed now (before they couldn't find the mansion file).
- Fixed bug where game would go fullscreen immediately after you entered a high score with
Submit online
checked, making it difficult to see where you ranked in the web browser's list of online high scores.
- Balanced sound effects volumes -- some 3D-positioned sound effects, like skull spider footsteps, were too soft.
- Balanced music volume again.
- Game window cannot be resized smaller than 640x480. (So that the in-game map screen does not mess up drawing.)
- Hopefully fixed the
screensaver activated when entering name for a high score
issue on some setups. (When coming out of fullscreen.)
- Fixed bug where, if you minimized Midnight Mansion's window, clicking on the application in the dock wouldn't bring it to the front. (Had to redo how I was creating the menu bar.)
- Removed
Dynamic Shadows (slower)
option from Options.
- Added
Enable GamePad
to Options. Please test your gamepad with MM if you have one! I particularly want to know if enabling this crashes your system!!

Fixes in 1.0.0 (since beta 6):
- Fixed bug where sounds played as static on PPC Macs.
- Fixed bug where door closing sound would occasionally not play (but be hard to reproduce).
- Added
More Games…
tab to title screen. Removed Open Replay button, since it's in the File menu, and it's cluttered with 3 tabs there.
- Light saber floors (
thick ghost platforms
) no longer reset upon entering a room. Metal disappearing floors still do, and now turn on faster.
- Game now gives a helpful error message (instead of quitting) when the 'TEXT' resource for a sign is misnamed and therefore can't be found.

First off -- all of you who are beta testers are entitled to a FREE copy of the HD version of the game (both episodes 1 and 2). If you wish to support me anyway and purchase one or both of those from the Mac App Store, you are certainly welcome to (this would allow you to leave a review there and rate the game -- which is very helpful!) but you are definitely entitled to a free copy if you wish it for your hard work beta testing!

The free copy I can provide once the
ActionSoft
version of Episodes 1 and 2 are ready -- in hopefully 1-3 weeks. (i.e. the version that you can download from the ActionSoft website, and uses registration codes.)

However, in case any of you DO purchase the Mac App Store version, I just wanted to give a word of warning: you need to delete ALL prior copies of Midnight Mansion HD that you have on your hard drive. (Or move them to a backup drive, and disconnect the drive, before installing the Mac App Store version.)

Why? Because the Mac App Store searches for any program with the same bundle identifier, and installs the version you download
into
the program it finds. Meaning, the Mac App Store version will be installed
into
one of your former beta versions of the game, if you have one you didn't delete. This will result in weird things, like the Mac App Store version having a name like
Midnight Mansion HD Beta 4
instead of the normal name, or maybe crashing on launch.

MM HD Live in Mac App Store

VernJensen

MM HD went live in the Mac App Store today. But before I announce it publicly on the ActionSoft blog and mailing list, I wanted to get feedback on how to do the $5 upgrade option.

First, it's highly critical that if at all possible, Midnight Mansion HD gets
Featured
by the Mac App Store. Being featured means it gets listed in one of the categories on their Games page, such as
New and Noteworthy
or
Staff Favorites
. Right now, it's not listed there. Apparently only selected games get listed in any of those categories.

If MM HD doesn't get featured, it's unlikely new players will ever find it in the store, and I really need the publicity.

Apparently the Mac App Store considers featuring games that meet some minimum requirements of sales and ratings. So here is my plan:

- Have all owners of the old Midnight Mansion purchase Episode 1 on the Mac App Store for $4.99. But download Episode 2 from the ActionSoft website (once this version becomes available). I could make it so that the registration codes from the original Midnight Mansion work for Episode 2, thereby making the total cost to
upgrade
to the new game only $5, as promised.

The advantage here is that A) Users get their $5 upgrade, and B) Hopefully a lot of sales and ratings are generated for Episode 1 on the Mac App Store, which will hopefully result in the game getting featured. And that would be a Very Good Thing for the future of Midnight Mansion.

My question is, does this sound acceptable? I know it's a *little* weird to download Episode 1 from the Mac App Store, and the other from the ActionSoft website, but in my mind it's the best all-around solution.

Please note: for those who don't want to purchase Episode 1 from the Mac App Store, YES -- I WILL be making that available from the ActionSoft website as well in 2 or 3 weeks hopefully. But the hope is that most people who have OS X 10.6 or later would get Episode 1 from the Mac App Store, which would allow them to review the game there, again, hopefully increasing chances of getting featured.

I've decided to start on a project: converting custom mansions, and playing them to check if they're ready for MMHD. <del>I'll post here about the mansions I've played, and bring up any issues I find.
</del>
EDIT: I've set up a spreadsheet here, so that anyone who intends to have a go at testing custom mansions can note down their findings in one place.

Status Board

A Room of One's Own by Freddy
Size: 1 room
Difficulty: ???
Status: Conversion successful, serious graphical glitches on run

Happy Hannukah! by Psychotronic
Size: Tiny [11 rooms]
Difficulty: • scaling up to •••• of 5
Status: Perfect conversion, ready to go (though a JackStuck is possible in room 16298)

Landlord's Pub by Freddy
Size: Tiny [2 rooms]
Difficulty: •• of 5
Status: Conversion successful, runs fine (slight problem in Room 16099, with spider's dragline drawn slightly off compared to spider).

Malone Manor by Alan / Falcon
Size: Tiny [4 rooms]
Difficulty: Utterly easy
Status: Perfect conversion, ready to go

One Room by Alexander
Size: 1 room
Difficulty: •1/2, of 5
Status: Conversion successful, runs fine (with a few layering issues; all appear deliberate except the glitched tiles by the exit door)

Note: My analyses of size ('Tiny' through 'XL') and difficulty are my own judgement. I welcome disputing opinions.

SoItBegins -- a while ago you reported this:
-------
Also, I discovered a new item that seems slightly off: If Jack dies by falling past the boundary of the screen, and enters the next screen at such a trajectory that he falls into a lava pit, Jack simply falls straight in w/o splashing.
The same occurs if Jack is killed by a zapper beam and falls into a lava pit (on the same screen); he doesn't splash, he just... falls in.
-------

I've been unable to duplicate this. I'm attaching my test mansion I created to try jumping into different types of lava. I had formerly also tried jumping in from a room above this, and also without the lava at the top of the lower screen -- so Jack landed in the lower lava pool. Nothing resulted in the problem you describe.

Where have you seen this specifically in the game? Can you repeat it?
Specifically, all sound was set to a backdrop of static, which is audible at all times and is on par (volume-wise) with the music, which can still be heard.
I'm running 10.5.8, PPC, PowerBook G4. Now what?
