I have a new avatar I'd like to use on the forums, but when I go to change my profile, it says I must have a web link. Can't I just upload it from my computer's hard drive?

It looks that you cannot upload it directly. Try to use something like photobucket instead, i.e. first upload your pic. to phb. and then use the link to your pic at phb in the user panel here at MM.
