Beta 3: Proposed Ladder Change! - VernJensen - 05-21-2010 Okay, so I have a question. In the screenshot attached, Jack can walk over to the ladder and climb it. Technically, this does not make any sense. The ladder should be abovejack -- he can't suddenly go from underto it to aboveit and start climbing. yet, the current incarnation of the game allows Jack to walk over and climb it. I propose that Jack should only be able to *get on* a ladder at the same places where he can *get off* the ladder. He can't get off the ladder on the middle ledge in this scenario, and so he shouldn't be able to get on it here, either. But, this is rather late in the testing process to make such a major change to basic gameplay. So the question is, would this break anything? It's too late for this to really benefit existing mansions much, but future designer could take advantage of this change to allow ladders to cross areas Jack can walk, without allowing Jack to get on them -- providing for a lot more creativity in building than was possible before. (Jack can, for instance, move from the top of the room to the bottom, whiel passing over a middle section, but he has not access to the middle section, and likewise, while in the middle section, he has no access to the top or bottom areas.) Re: Beta 3: Proposed Ladder Change! - VernJensen - 05-21-2010 I suppose if I added this, it might make sense to allow ladders to be put in layer 6 too. Since in this case, the ladder should be in frontof Jack when he's walking in the middle portion. This this adds quite a bit of complication for both the designer, and for me. For the designer, he'd have to put some of the ladder (the top and bottom parts) in layer 5, so they draw behind Jack as expected, but put the part of the ladder that overlaps the middle part in layer 6, so Jack walks/jumps behindit when walking in the middle part. More complicated yes, but possible, and would allow a lot of cool new designs I think. Aside from that, I have a whole programming complication to support ladders in both layer 5 *and* 6... Re: Beta 3: Proposed Ladder Change! - VernJensen - 05-21-2010 Here's a screenshot that better demonstrates what I'm talking about. The ladder is in layer 6 in the middle part (and could be for the top part too), and layer 5 for the bottom part. Re: Beta 3: Proposed Ladder Change! - Toybox - 05-21-2010 It makes sense. The current behaviour allows for interesting puzzles as well though. Plus, you can prevent Jack from climbing a ladder from the middle (with a hole in the floor). I don't think a change would greatly impact my own mansions, so you could go either way. Except my ongoing problems with having scenery in front of Jack just kidding, I can live with it!
Re: Beta 3: Proposed Ladder Change! - Wingy - 05-21-2010 I can think of only one place this would mess something up; Leofani Manor Hard, the secret right after the first section -- but I can easily adjust. So, yeah, sounds like a good idea. Also, on a side note, would it be possible if you could enable zapper beams to have an option (like grey doors) to be off at the start? Isn't this possible with the lever's Action is default room statecheckbox? Or is there something I'm missing here? And maybe with T switches now. Re: Beta 3: Proposed Ladder Change! - brell - 05-22-2010 I have a question: Will you change this in the OLD MM as well? This situation happens quite a few times in the classic MM custom and included mansions. My suggestion is to leave it as it is in the classic game. Re: Beta 3: Proposed Ladder Change! - Wingy - 05-23-2010 No. Last time I checked this board was for the sequel beta.
