Welcome! Read Me First - VernJensen - 04-03-2010

If you can read this, is because you've been selected as a beta tester for Midnight Mansion 2. Please read this entire message carefully.

Download the first beta here:

www.actionsoft.com/files/mmsequel/MMSequelBeta1.zip

First, notice there are several topics I've started. One is
General Discussion
. This is where you can post general feedback about the game, bug reports, etc. There is also
First Impressions
where you can just post what you think after you first try the game.

Also notice there is a topic for each mansion that comes with the game (including two in the Custom Mansions folder). As you play through the mansions, post comments about the specific mansions you play in the appropriate topic. This will help mansions designers be able to find comments about their mansion easily.

Please do NOT combine mansion-related messages with game-related messages. So if you find a bug that is in the game (not specific to some mansion) post it in the General area, separate from your comments about a mansion.

Feel free to just play whatever you want at first, but then choose a mansion you're going to finish, and announce which one you'll be playing in the
Mansions being tested
topic. Look here first to see what mansions others are playing, and try to pick ones not being played as much. The goals is to make sure every mansion gets tested.

Please note that the game itself is not finished, in terms of what you see before you start a mansion. There will be a new Difficulty screen, a new story, a new beat-the-game screen, new About and
Buy me!
screens, new online scores for the sequel, new game icons, etc. So please don't comment on any of this.

However, what IS finished is the gameplay. While you are playing a mansion, any problems you find here should definitely be reported.

However, I'm also very interested in the answer to this question:
Is the difficulty of every room in thismansion appropriate for the difficulty setting you're playing at?
If you're playing Easy, are some rooms too Hard? If you're playing Hard, are some rooms too easy? For Normal, is it balanced? Are the save pointed frequent enough?

Not all mansions can be played on Easy or Hard modes. All of them can be played on Normal though. And you can play the following:

Easy:
Blackheart Keep
Castle Basano
Citadel of Dr Cassiopus
Leofani Manor

Hard:
Castle Basano
Citadel of Dr Cassiopus
Leofani Manor

The rest will have easy/hard versions posted when they are ready.

Also note that two additional mansions are available for testing inthe Custom Mansions folder. Use the Open Mansion button to test these. However, the priority is to test the other, built-in mansions first.

Oh, I forgot to mention:

Before you do anything else, please click on Options and turn automatic movie recording of all your games to *on*. This is off by default.

That way, you can send me movies of anything you ever do as a tester!

Where can I find the movies that have been recorded?

Re: Welcome! Read Me First - sherryl199 - 04-11-2010

Hi Vern,
OK, I will stick my head under the blade, but I think what is happening with the beta testing seems random and chaotic in many ways. Multiple posts about multiple problems in the same mansion. My suggestion would be to assign testers a specific mansion(s) after the initial bug fixes. That seems to me to be a way that all mansions would be tested equally. Perhaps, if you want everyone to test, you could switch mansions among testers after a specific period of time.

Re: Welcome! Read Me First - rose - 04-11-2010

That is a good idea, Sherryl199!

Re: Welcome! Read Me First - VernJensen - 04-12-2010

That is actually the purpose of the
Mansions Being Tested
forum. Except that I don't have to micro-manage it, and each tester can *choose* for himself what he'd like to test, since each person knows their strengths (easy, normal, hard). And it also gives the flexibility to test multiple mansions at once if you prefer.

Part of the problem with assigning mansions to testers is that I must've signed up some 20+ testers so far, and yet it seems only 6 or so are actively testing and posting feedback. So I'm not sure who I can assign a mansion to. From past experience, I know that many testers are flaky -- they sign up just to try the game before anyone else, but never post anything useful beyond maybe 1 or 2 brief messages. I'm very happy with the excellent testing being done so far by Rose, Sheryll, and a few others (sorry I'm forgetting your names at the moment) -- it's much more thorough than many have done in the past. So keep it up!

And do feel free to make use of the
Mansions Being Tested
board to help organize yourselves. :-)

Re: Welcome! Read Me First - VernJensen - 04-12-2010

Quick question: when I release Beta 2, would it work well for me to create *brand new* threads for each mansion? They'd start off with
Beta 2:
i.e.:

Beta 2: Dr Demented's Den
Beta 2: Leofani Manor
Beta 2: ...

So after you download beta 2, you put your comments for mansion bugs in these new threads. I think this would help avoid confusion. Sound good?

Re: Welcome! Read Me First - Toybox - 04-12-2010

I wouldn't mind either way, but then I have only one mansion out there. It could be slightly neater with new threads, maybe.

Re: Welcome! Read Me First - Semi-Native - 04-12-2010

Yes, Vern, we definitely could use new threads. I had also suggested splitting them out into Easy, Normal, and Hard to avoid even more confusion.
