Midnight Mansion sequel screenshots

In early 2007, I began work on a sequel to Midnight Mansion, which I then put on hold to create Insectoid, and also to give mansion designers time to create their mansions for the game. Now that Insectoid is out, I can resume work on the Midnight Mansion sequel, which is already 70% or so complete. It’s a lot of fun to come back to it! Midnight Mansion is a great game that stands the test of time, and has developed quite a loyal following of fans. I look forward to making those fans happy with a major improvement to the game that adds lots of new artwork, several new monsters, new types of puzzles, new music, and much more.

Here are a few screenshots that show some of the new tile artwork in the game. One thing the game has now is several outdoor environments. It also has effects like real-time rain, snow, or falling leaves, which add a surprising amount of atmosphere to the game.

The new graphics look very different and cool. Love the grass, the rain, the look of the big spider. Interesting changes to the bricks. I am SO looking forward to the sequelQ

I’m curious if there are any new mechanics…? Anyway, totally looking forward to this. MM is a game with incredible longevity.

  3. Anthony says:

It is looking very good so far, and very looking forward to how it will turn out. ;)

Rhywun: yes, there are a number of new mechanics. There are invisible triggers that can cause things to happen (but the built-in mansions will never use these in a cheap way), moving platforms can move between rooms, as well as in new patterns (like a square or L-shape), and probably other things I’m forgetting.

    Neat!

WOW, can’t wait. Neat! Merry Xmas to ME! THANK YOU

Marvelous, reminds me of old platform games on the Spectrum and makes me drool!.

I would love a Windows port, and I really hope you’re able to do it (already one customer here!).

BTW, just bought Insectoid, in case it can help you to continue working in the indie game market ;) .

Agnus, thanks for your support — every bit helps! And yes, I would love to do a Windows port, sometime after the Mac version of the sequel is released. But whether I can depends on how successful the sequel is… if I can keep paying rent and buying food long enough to get a Windows port completed.

That looks really promising! I can’t wait to play!

Oh, I just purchased Insectoid and already made it through the “easy” version with the “fireball” ship. The game is pretty awesome. I was a Galaga-addict when I was a kid and this definitely brings back memories!

I was looking for a space to exchange info and opinions about Insectoid on the ActionSoft page but couldn’t find one. Is there such a thing and I am just too stupid to find it? If not, are you thinking about starting an Insectoid forum?

  10. vern says:

    leo –

Good question! Yes, I do plan to put forums up for “ActionSoft” in general, which will certainly have Insectoid specific forums. Not sure when I’ll get around to this, but hopefully soon! Glad to hear you are enjoying the game! Just keep in mind it’s way more fun on Normal or Hard, once you can handle those difficulties. ;-)

  11. This looks really promising, hopefully all us fans shouldn’t be waiting that much longer for this and I hope there are many different features added to the editor. Is it alright if I help advertise on my website? I also see that there’s also acid and water, very exciting stuff. Later could you maybe post some more screenshots on the levels with snow, rain ect.? And will the level editor also enable weather like that?

    Thanks
    Leon

  12. vern says:

Leon, yes you can set rain, snow, and falling leaves easily in the editor, and the editor does support some new features, such as invisible triggers, moving platforms that can do new things, etc. Sure, you can advertise it on your website.

  13. Thanks for all the info, I can’t wait ’till the release ;)

I’m going to pester you to port to the iPhone for as long as it takes… Have you checked out Brian Greenstone’s videos about his experiences on the app store?

  15. vern says:

Cool video, thanks for sharing! It’s funny, because I intuitively know everything he describes in how to market the game — and in fact have done all of those things already for Insectoid.

18,000 copies of Enigma sold, per day, in its heyday? Holy cow, Batman! That’s insane madness.

  16. vern says:

Here’s another one. Crazy how much money he’s made just from Enigma on iPhone.

  17. Alan says:

Yeah, that second video is a really good one too. I love how open Brian has been about his success, giving real numbers and realistic advice.

  18. Alan says:

Hmn… now I want to play Midnight Mansion on my iPhone … AND on the new iPad!

  19. K says:

Any updates on this Midnight Mansion sequel? I’ve played the original version to death and would love to get my hands on this new version!

  20. vern says:

Yes, the sequel is coming along quite well! It’s been in beta testing a little over 2 months now, and its getting very close! I expect to be able to release it late July or August.
